Airplanes, also known as “Bi-Planes,” because of their double wings, were a new phenomenon to the battlefield. At first the airplane was mainly used for reconnaissance missions to photograph and take back information on the enemy lines and other vital information. Soon they were outfitted with machine guns and later grenades to drop on enemy lines. The machine guns were at first an issue as the pilots would shred their own propellers. Not until the Germans built a mechanism called an interrupter gear to pause the propellers that this issue was resolved. The Entente got this technology when they downed a German fighter plane. Thought of as a gentleman's game initially, the pilots would salute each other before dueling. Often was the sight for those in the trenches to look up and see these duels.
It was not until later in the war that planes were used to drop bombs on enemy trenches.
