Begun on July 1, 1916, as a way to pull German soldiers from the Battle of Verdun, the British bombarded the German lines which was followed in unison by British troops. The key was the British used what is called a “creeping” bombardment where the artillery shells land just ahead of the troops so as to give them cover. In all, over 1 million shells were fired over the first 4 days of the battle. The British did not know the Germans had dug their trenches so deep allowing them to safely and relatively comfortably stay out of the danger. On the first day of battle over 58,000 British troops were killed. The offensive was called off on November 13 due to lack of advances.
