The Zimmerman Telegram was a telegram sent to the President of Mexico from the German Ambassador. Encoded within its contents was a request that the Mexicans attack the United States before they were able to mobilize to the war in Europe. It specified that the Mexican Army attack through Texas and New Mexico so as to keep the Americans busy on their own soil. The ploy did not work. The President of Mexico knew that attacking the U.S. would only end in despair. As there was no animosity between the two countries, the President sent the telegram to the U.S. State Department. This telegram once it was brought to the U.S. publics attention pushed the American people to back the foreign war.
