What Was Trench Life Like?

Trench life was dirty, uncomfortable and disease ridden. Not only did soldiers have to contend with the enemy attacks, they also had to deal with rats the size of full grown cats and the decaying bodies of those already fallen comrads. Those who died had to be left inside the trenches because it was too dangerous to leave the relative trench safety to bury them. Lice was a common thing which hours were taken during breaks in fighting to "de-louse," the term used for killing the lice on thier clothes. Meals were cold and rare inside the trenches. Every few days the soldiers in the trenches were usually given three days to go behind the lines of fighting to relax and eat warm meals. This was required as soldiers could go insane from the constant noise and stress.
