Belleau Wood was from 6-26 June, 1918 where the U.S. forces recaptured the Metz-Paris road from the German Seventh Army after it had been taken during a previous battle. There were many U.S. casualties on the first day due to the open nature of the terrain before reaching the wooded area. This was because the Germans had set up crossing lanes of machine gun fire which made it nearly impossible to safely pass. The woods were taken and retaken a total of 6 times before the Germans realized it was pointless and left the field of battle.
