Tanks were originally developed to help end the stalemate of trench warfare which had overtaken the battlefields. These tanks were basic in their design. One on average weighed 14 tons and had 12 foot frames. The 3 passengers were cramped within its confines where the exhaust fumes would normally back up into. The actual speed of these monsters was 3 miles per hour on level ground and only 2 miles per hour in rough terrain. Although they were slow they did protect the occupants from bullets and shrapnel. The early tanks carried a cannon as its main weapon and on average 2 machine guns to protect its sides. There were many successes attributed to the tank in many battles of the First World War.
