John J. Pershing

John J Pershing was born 13 Sep 1860 in Missouri where he would become a schoolteacher. In 1882 he won an appointment to West Pointe where he was a average student but showed exceptional leadership skills. Upon graduation he became professor of military Science and Tactics. In 1906 he was promoted to Brigadier General. In 1917 when the United States entered the war, he was a full general and appointed Commander-In-Chief of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF). He would successfully lead the AEF in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in 1918. In 1921, he became army chief of staff. In 1924, Congress awarded the title “General of the Armies” an award only held by one other person ever- George Washington. He passed away in 1948.
