Submarines were part of every major navy of the world but before the outbreak of World War One questions arose as to their value. With exception to Germany, the submarine was mainly used as coastal defense. Torpedoes were the main weapon on these vessels. Some of the British ones would be outfitted with deck guns for when they were not submerged. They were run by diesel engines driving while surfaced which produced a large amount of toxic gas that the crew had to breath in. When they were submerged, 2 large batteries took over. Their batteries only allowed them to be submerged for 2 hours before having to surface and recharge.
